Consumer Culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words - 1

Consumer Culture - Essay ExampleThe Lexicon Webster dictionary defines the work out of consumption as to destroy or expend by use to destroy as by decomposition or burning. Consumerism thus suggests a wasteful, unnecessary act that follows the use, and so spawned a goal that is base on luxury not need. The luxuries of consumer culture become more than simply goods but appear as markers of social status or moral decay, Stearns, P. (2001) observes. What bothers social and behavioral scientists is that consumerism is animated by exactly the equivalent objects of luxury and non-essentials. This has characterized the movement of consumer culture from its origin in the western hemisphere to its worldwide spread that matched the rapid rate of globalization. Many are therefore asking Is consumerism making the world too homogeneousFrom the beginning, consumerism grew in the West precisely out of the desire for luxury and vanity, not necessity. It is believed that aristocrats and noblemen in the old British empire, France and split of Italy and Germany started it only as they sought ways to avoid the stench from markets and factories back in the18th century or prior when public sanitation and garbage disposal systems were yet to be developed. When it was raining or the sun was ablaze, the old-world people wanted cover and comfort when they stepped outside. With the advent of mass production and the free market creat ion in the early 20th century, consumerism really took off with the coming of new consumer goods (automobiles, bicycles, food) and consumer leisure (movies, spectator sports). Consumer culture also became an integral part of celebrations like holidays, birthdays. Stearns, P. (2001), who looks at the development of consumerism as one of the greatest changes in the human experience, puts forth the theory that the consumerist society came into being in the 18th century through a complex web of factors, including an increase in wage earnings, a desire and opportunity to emulate the rich, and a need for goods of value to compensate for the coordinates of identity lost with the passing of a stable, rural way of life. This jibes with the advanced sociological view that man is by instinct a creation that desires to be in the go of things, to look successful and lavish. As Western culture brought consumerism along in its spread to all parts of the world, consumers everywhere behave in basi cally the same manner they buy goods that they dont need for subsistence but as a means of demonstrating modest achievement in new ways. The goods themselves come from the same mold, identical in every

Factors affecting the activity of enzymes Essay Example for Free

Factors affecting the operation of enzymes EssayFactors affecting the activity of enzymes Aim to investigate the factors affecting the activity of enzymes. Factors The factors that could possibly affect the activity of enzymes be Temperature rate of chemical chemical answer increases as temperature increases. Concentration of enzyme rate of reaction increases as concentration of enzyme increases. pH extremes of pH denature enzymes. go up area rate of reaction increases as surface area increases. Inhibitors if there are any impurities, and past they impart restrict the rate of the reaction.Key Factor I depart be using temperature as a variable, and keeping all other factors everlasting. Therefore, testing temperature as the key factor. Prediction I believe, that as the temperature of the starch and amylase increases, as will the rate of the reaction. However, once the optimum temperature is reached, the amylase will stop working. Hypothesis The agent I believe that as the temperature of the starch and amylase increases, as will the rate of the reaction, is because of the collision possibility. The collision theory tells us, that the more the solution is heated, the more the particles inside joggle. Therefore, if the different particles are vibrating a lot more, it means that they will collide a lot more, and so the reaction will occur a lot faster. So in the case of the experiment we will be doing the higher the temperature of the starch and amylase, the more these particles will vibrate and collide, and so the faster the amylase will be broken fine-tune. I in like manner believe, that once an optimum temperature is reached, the amylase will stop working. This is because, higher up a certaintemperature, enzymes, being proteins are denatured (change shape), and so can no longer combine with the substances. Fair Test In order to make this a fair test, the following(a) things must be taken into account Ensure that the volumes of amylase and star ch are constant. Ensure that the pH levels of the starch and amylase are the same. Ensure that all the apparatus are totally clean, i. e. have no impurities. Ensure that the temperature of the solutions reside the same as planned. Ensure that the temperatures of the water baths and ice bath are kept as constant as possible.Ensure that the starch and amylase solution is kept in the water bath in betwixt each 30-second gap, so as to ensure a constant temperature throughout. Method Two test-tubes, one fill up with 5mg of starch suspension, and one filled with 5mg of amylase solution, are both posture into a tub of ice. Whilst these are remaining inside the tub to cool down, droplets of iodine solution are put in each nether region of the spotting tray. Once the temperatures of the starch and amylase solution have become constant, then they are mixed together, and a droplet of this solution is then added to the first cavity of iodine. The test-tube is then put back in the ice tub, and then every 30 seconds, another droplet of the solution is added to a different cavity of iodine, until the purple colour that should appear, has disappeared. The conviction taken for the purple colour to disappear, is then recorded. When the purple colour disappears, it means that the amylase has totally broken down the starch. The same process is then repeated, but in water baths, with temperatures of 30? C, 50? C, and one is also done in room temperature. Everything is then repeated once more, and the average times for each temperature are calculated.Diagram Apparatus The following apparatus will be used in the experiment 3 water baths tub pipette 2 syringes 2 beakers 2 test-tubes spotting tray thermometer test-tube holder Results Temperature (i C) 0i C 20i C 30i C 50i C Time Attempt 1 450secs 270secs 180secs 210secs taken for Attempt 2 480secs 300secs 180secs 210secs starch to just 465secs 285secs 180secs 210secs disappear 1/T 1/465secs 1/285secs 1/180secs 1/210secs Graph C onclusion To a certain extent my hypothesis was correct, but there still were some unforeseen results. For example, I mentioned in my hypothesis that as the temperature of the starch and amylase increases, as will the rate of the reaction. As the graph shows, the rate of reaction did increase as the temperature increased, but single to a point after 30? C, the rate of reaction began to decrease. However, in my hypothesis, I mentioned that once a high enough temperature is reached, the amylase would stop working. This of course was incorrect, because once it reached 30? C, the amylase did not stop working, it just became less efficient. One thing I noticed whilst looking at the results table, was that as the temperature increased by 10? C, the rate of reaction doubled. This would explain why the graph increases steady at the beginning, and then starts to steeply increase. Errors and Improvements Some of the results may have been inaccurate, due to the 30-second range in surrounded by each time another droplet is added to a cavity of iodine. This could have been improved upon, by making it only a 5-second range for example, because the exact time when the starch disappears would be closer to the time recorded than with a 30-second range. An example as to why a couple of the results may not have been proportional, is when the starch and amylase were put in the ice tub. It is very unlikely that the solutions would have reached 0? C and remained constant. This could have been improved upon, by putting the solutions in a freezer instead, because it would keep to the same temperature throughout. Out and Disabled Essay Example for Free

divulge and alter EssayCompare and Contrast the ways in how Out, Out and Disabled present the estimate of a forgotten dupe The poem Out, Out by Robert Frost has a blotto resemblance with the poem Disabled by Wilfred Owen as 2 poems demonstrate the fragility of intent and how unrivaled persons death canister be easily forgotten. Out, Out the title speaks of e actually social function, apply in Shakespeares play Macbeth It implies how life is ultimately described like a candle, when the flame goes tally there is eternal darkness. In Disabled it essentially shows the same meaning where the womens interest passed to strong men that were whole beca practice session the once glorious man in Disabled became nothing at all. The use of personification in Out, Out where the go saw snarled and rattled evokes a sense of foreboding. The buzz saw is seen as aggressive where cutting the boys hand was seen as a intention and was meant to happen after all. The saw is seen as aggres sive where cutting the boys hand was seen as a target and was meant to happen after all.The boy is simply nothing but dinner to the piranha as he was its supper was mentioned right at the same moment when his hand was cut off. This is an effective order of making the boy seem worthless. The buzz saw has its own mind and is always one quantity ahead(predicate) to make it seem dominant. Betrayal is a spot point of the two poems as twain victims had been betrayed by their own people. The boy was seen as only another death so no one cared abtaboo what happened since they were not the ones dead so they just move on with their life without any mourning. In Disabled the man was also seen as someone who is nothing as he is no durable whole. Where he was once a celebrated man, his life had completely flip-flopd due to his inexperience and fleeceable view on war. He shares a similar fate as to the boy in Out, Out His actions were noble but they dont bailiwick at all since he had gaine d nothing out of it, he wasnt able to win his Meg and he only brought back scars from the war. He was leave alone like garbage since the women moved away to the other strong men.No matter what he did for his nation, he was a forgotten victim like the boy in Out, Out. It explains that the lives of these two people are insignificant and its best just to move on. On the other hand, both(prenominal) poems are both structured differently. Out, Out is a flowing story which has no stanzas. This structure allows the poem to be more fluid and keeps the pace of the story moving. It is seen through a third person thought whereas Disabled the structure of the poem has stanzas and shows the perception of the past and the present.Robert Frosting juxtaposes the structure of the poem which aims to give a strong sense of contrast from one another so by using the past and the present, it is a very important role in the poem because one of the interesting surgical incision of Disabled is the impo rtant character as we can easily see how rueful he is due to his nostalgic geezerhood of when he was young. At stanza 1, it is hard to convince that the ruined man is the same person in stanza 3.He was known as one of the admired people as he was silly for his face. As he looked like a god in kilts it is very contrasting to his future where he is in his gruesome suit. However, even though they have a contrasting structure they have something similar in price of events that are not mentioned. Both poems predict something dreadful is about to happen to the characters as the personification use in Out, Out snarled and rattled hints that that the buzz saw is planning to strike. The structure has an unusual change where it is first introduced to something unpleasant which is the buzz saw but then the tone quickly changes to a noneffervescent state. Then it quickly shows the mountain ranges one behind the other and under the sunset, far into Vermont it foreshadows the boys death as the beauty could symbolize heaven. The tone quickly changes from concentrated to something serene. One other thing which is fascinating is that the poem has an image of society where society is cruelly creating the imprint of a forgotten victim just like the women in Disabled. The fact that both poems have the characters offering their body part creates an impression that they are worthless. It gives an idea that the body parts are no yearlong their own body. In Disabled he threw away his knees which is an unsympathetic manner to mention about his own legs Out, out is very comparable as he has given the hand. The fact that it wasnt mentioned as his hand proves that it was no longer his own.In the poems both protagonists are robbed of their youth because they are both thrust into a dangerous braggy world. They are chosen to be killed and left field alone even though they are young which gives a poignant feeling and the sense of being forgotten. They interestingly have the same charact eristics because in Out, out the boy is doing a mans work which implies a sense of experience and doing work that is years ahead of his age. Equal with Disabled where he finds himself in the present in a suit of grey.Similarly both protagonist in the poems portray the sense of being used by people because once they cant achieve anything, they are no use to their leaders and society so they are left alone, isolated and gone from the world feeling betrayed as the boy was just basically used and the handicapped man was rejected may assume that he threw away his life as well as he poured the colours down into shell holes. In comparison, the boy in Out, Out gives a stronger feeling of sorrow or grief for the boy as he is doing something he shouldnt. In Disabled the idea of a forgotten victim is not shown as him resulting in death. It is the opposite of the boy as he is longing for his death. A powerful word Wilfred Owen used was that eternal rest had mothered which is a personification t hat shows his love of sleep where he is nurtured and safe, it even implies that the man is depressed. It assumes that the disabled man wants to escape from domain and go to his own reality in his sleep. Overall, the fragility and delicateness of life and youth mainly presents the idea of the forgotten victim. A forgotten victim is usually immobilized and helpless when they have lost everything.Out, Out and Disabled poignantly present forgotten victims. regular when doing a noble action like joining the army, a man can still be rejected among people. Out, out and Disabled were both written during difficult measure and acquaints the reader to the atmosphere of the earlier 19s. Disabled and Out, Out was written during the World War 1 where it was difficult and dark times yet in Out, Out we get a taste of how cold society was back then. parliamentary procedure can be cruel and filled with individualism where everyone is their own man so it plays a key point of making the two victim s forgotten.

My Favorite Manager Essay Example for Free

My Favorite Manager EssayI worked in Strategic Centre, Consumer support go and global solution centre. I was hired as an front line operative and got promoted to Tech running role over time. When I was a trainer, my manager was Navin Kumar. Before working at HP, I apply to work with Convergys. I was a front end operative at each of the other jobs forward HP. Navin Kumar was my favorite because he had a relaxed mentality to the job only held accountability for actions. He al down in the mouthed me and the other Trainers to throw off a say when running the Training module. He had the final say on all ideas but was open for input to improve the function of the Trainers faculty. He was rattling personable and did not have the normal manager attitude. If I did my work when he wanted it completed and it was up to his level of quality his alliance was to a greater extent similar to that of friends than a manager. If you failed to assure his expectations then he came down on m e with a very strong force. He was not a typical manager in that sense. He set soaring expectations because he wanted me to succeed at a high level instead of setting low goals and just settling for an easy way out. He would set weekly goals and would reward the highest trainer efficiency scores that was internally maintained by HP Training team. This was motivation to test training methods and estimate to beat out my co-workers. He also had a level of respect for each of his employees that I never received at one of my other jobs.At HP everyone had the same level of expectations and if you did not meet them, Navin would work with that person to build up their quality of work or they would be mentored more rigorously with a clear performance improvement plan for not meeting expectations. I respected him more for being open to criticism. He would allow his trainers and senior trainers to critique him and help him improve his work quality. If I could work for Navin Kumar again I woul d immediately

Book Review on Home by Marilynne Robinson Essay Example for Free

Book Review on Home by Marilynne Robinson EssayLost and alone, allow Glory and Jack find themselves? Will they know what family truly means? Perhaps, all they simply postulate is one a nonher and their contract. Glory had been grief-stricken, being left by the man she trusted, going her with nonhing moreover to re submit to the old house in Iowa, where her frail pop lives alone. There she was, olfactory sensationing neglected and trifling while, along with her father, awaits the surprising return of her long lost brother, Jack. A man with a troubled olden and in an uncertain state, Jack recognises kin looking distressed exclusively grateful. He was different among his siblings ever so since, enthralling the thrill of creating troubles but deep inside, he is a good and caring person. Unfortunately, guilt has eaten him. Remorse caused by the wrong decisions he had made towards his dear ones and the unwillingness to forgive himself. While the two are battling their experience wars, their father is trying to make amends with them because he, too, is feeling like a disaster as a dad, especially to Jack. He was not a perfect father but he tried to be, lacking what was best for his children. The return of Jack has turned the three lives around and also Ames and his familys. It has opened the eyes and midpoint of each one, addressing to their many c at one timerns and problems, internally and within the family. Jack and Glory had both found a confidant in each other, back uping cure their personal pains little by little. The simple gestures and conversations they had had reinforced a growing bond between brother and sister. The love and tutelage shown to each other and their dad had compensated the past sorrows they had experienced. These have made Jack and Glory whole again, being the person they once were or hoped to be.After everything the Boughtons have gone by means of, all the troubles and heartaches, they were finally able to feel what happiness is through the authenticization that the family is the most important thing in ones life because here, there is level love and trust. Family is where they have found themselves, a place where they can truly call home. Analysis cypher can compare to a familys love for one another. Home is a novel well-nigh family. Robert Boughton had constant questions and worries round his children. He always seemed tired because of the sadness and guilt he feels for thinking he was a failure as a father. He has troubled children, showing that one raised in a Christian home has no certainty that he/she will lead a Christian life. It still depends on ones own choice and apparently, Jack has not made the advanced ones. He has finally come home, but was almost unrecognizable and distant. He felt undeserving and move for being treated so well, though have caused much trouble, because he led a unspoken life while away. Jack is a good person, as mentioned by Ames who is evidently most pe eved at him, knowing he has committed many mistakes and trying to have a better person. He struggles everyday with his dilemmas, feeling like a disgrace to the family, and wanting to be at peace but cant seem to find it. Slowly, with his familys help, he began to heal and change, but not whole up until the end. Jack left, as suggested by his caring brother Teddy, for the sake of their ailing father. He did not want to cause anymore trouble and see his father suffer, but he did agree to come home if he needs help, realizing that families are forever. Both Teddy and Glory will be there. entirely the soul finds its own home if it even has a home at all Glory, like Jack, is lost, alone and bitter. She carries on life with a heavy heart, as she takes care of her ailing father and a rugged brother. Feeling hopeless, she seeks attention and fortunately, her two brothers show it to her. She understands Jack, but not completely because of his secretive character and he, too, tacit her, her feelings and battles. As the layer progresses, there was a growing bond between brother and sister, whether it was taking care of their father or sharing thoughts and opinions, though avoiding to bring up the pressing issues amongst them.Nevertheless, they became better individuals because of each other. The noble truly is wonderful The story was ordered chronologically, with the occasional recalling of the past. It started with the return of Glory and Jack until his leaving. It is equally about Glorys and Jacks internal conflict. The story revolves around over sexual climax the misfortunes each has encountered, due to sicken decisions, through the understanding and care of family. Another internal conflict was the minister, feeling like a failure as a dad. With these being the main plots, the subplots would be the relationship of Jack and Ames, together with his family, and the coming home of Teddy. The external problem was the coming home of Jack and Glory. He seemed distracted , causing worry to his sister and father and she, left unmarried, cheated, and alone. The narration of the story is character-based since the plot unfolds through the opinions and decisions made by the characters, not from having this setting to the next.No doubt that the story reflects religion, the uncertainty that everyone feels about it because there, as mentioned by Ames, is no absolute knowledge on what it really is. The stories among the characters parallel some characters and stories in the Bible such as David, Lazarus and The Prodigal Son. The plot evolved from the elegant change in emotions. Glory began to feel needed and responsible in making her brother feel better and her father well, while Jack felt being part of the family. He saw and cognize that his family would accept him for who he is and would try to do everything to make him feel welcome. In the outside, the plot was about the coming home and duties of both Glory and Jack, visiting of Ames and Teddy, and the pa rting of Jack. There were a lot of themes in the story such as guilt, loneliness, resentment and religion, but the main theme was the importance of the relationship among family members. It can help make everything much better, though slowly but surely. The theme is based from the belief of Robinson and I, definitely, agree with her. Family is the basic unit of society and is the foundation of every individual. The relationship among members should be strong in order for all of them to be stable and complete as each individual. Personal Application/Impression Home was a hard point. Though an avid reader, the book was more complicated and confusing compared to the fiction novels I unremarkably read. The words have so much meaning and the plots were not pen in a sequence, leaving me puzzled. I soon began to understand the context of the story and the meaning of those sentences that seemed too long after study more.Marilynne Robinson writes Home in a reminiscing manner and with tho rough explanations of the actions done by the characters. I have never read a novel as defined as this, enabling me to imagine the exact happenings in the story. Home has touched me, making me appreciate my family even more. I can feel the characters experiences when it comes to family, their effort to become closer and trying to offer help. It takes me from keeping my own problems to sharing it with my family because I now truly embody that they would accept me for who I am and help me with my troubles. The characters acted the way people actually do in real life and the settings were a possibility. Home truly is a beautiful and moving book, showing the importance of family. yet I did not enjoy the writing as much, though the storyline and intention of the author was wonderful. It was written with much effort, but a little too dragging and confusing. Maybe it was confusing because partly, I did not get to read the first book, Gilead, but the plots did jump from one to the other. Not e that it is a must to read Gilead first for better understanding and appreciation of Home. The developing of the story was slow and some do enjoy that type of writing but I dont so, it was a little dragging. It was hard to turn to the next varlet if the ending of a page is not as interesting. Robinson built a knotty plot but bores some readers like me. It did not have action in every page but again, it is interesting for those who love to imagine being the character himself. A well-written novel, but no snuff it of fiction is perfect for everybody.

Maus essay Essay Example for Free

Maus essay EssayI Maus by Art spiegelman shows imagery. It resembles the quote from Hitler The Jews are undoubtedly a race, but they are not military man, and shows that the different groups of sight have essential characteristics that are represented by the animals they are portrayed as in the book. This just shows how low Germans are towards the Jews. In the comic book of Maus, Vladek tells some horrible stories of when he was in the holocaust.Artie (his son) is very interested in the way the holocaust was and how his father and gone through it when he was younger. In one of the clips it shows Vladeks number that he was given to be represented by sort of of his name. Some of his stories were of how they would just kill any random person, even if they had their papers. The Germans wanted to become superior in every way they possibly lavatory. The umpteen different ways of representing the animals towards people are the way people may act or themselves. For instance the pigs represented as the polish, the mouse are represented as the Jewish. The animals that are shown for them are based on themselves and their looks. If you had Blonde hair and blue eyes, browned hair brown eyes were their perfect race. Even though the book was black and white in reality you can see the colors everywhere. The stories about the way the charwoman and children were handle would make you throw up.If a child was crying or wouldnt be quiet they would get thrown against the wall and have their skulls broken. The women were treated just like men having to carry around heavy items and get beat just the same. Men, children and woman should not be treated the same when it comes to work or punishments. In conclusion the holocausts were the roughest of the times. Too many people were killed for no reason at all. Ive proved innocent people should not be murdered for no reason at all.

Scientific Management Essay Example for Free

scientific Management EssayRepresentatives of capital supporter scientific counseling. It proposes to accession industrial output by managing tote scientific anyy. But organise labour does not want to be scientific all toldy managed. It is not keen to the highest degree being managed at all. It exists, in fact, to manage itself.Labour contr every(prenominal) betokensies, as carried on by the Ameri push aside confederacy of Labour, are demands for a voice in the settlement of conditions of work. But this demand is not recognized by capital as a teaching. It is only recognized as a necessity when labour, through passe-partout strength, secures its demands in this trade and that. The concession to labour of a voice in determining conditions of work nub by implication to capital that perplexity as a whole is tacit in its sustain hands it also means that its actual title to superior, or give birthership rights, is not in question. The industrial Workers of the World go ou ts no doubt in the mind of capital that it claims only a voice in the management of industry. It makes its fight on the grounds of labours sole ownership, as well as right, to sole management in all that labour produces. Every engrave, either difference between nonionised labour and capital, is an crusade of the former to wrest management, or some degree of management, from the latter. Whether it is an A. F. of L. or an I. W. W. fights, there is in each and every ace this issue of management. The question of management is, in fact, the labour movement. If production is to be scientifically managed, organized labour insists that it shall submit a hand in the management, or it shall do the managing. It refuses to grow enthusiastic over propositions, which are worked out for it, or without its cooperation, by others who claim to know offend than labour knows what is for its good.It was with something like pain surprise that the advocates of scientific management discovered tha t their propositions to manage labour more efficiently, and to lighten its burdens, met a frigidity reception at the hands of the conservative, as well as the radical, labour unions. It is conceivable that the might dusts of scientific management might admit the labour unions in conference in the settlement of conditions but it is unequivocal that nothing is further from the intention of the promoters of the knowledge, and that such a proposition would quite seriously impair its purpose.Mr. Frederick W. Taylor, the drawing card of the movement, tells The greater advantage comes from the overbold and unheard-of burdens which are assumed by the men in the management, duties which establish never been performed by the men or the management side.(1) These new duties Mr. Taylor divides into four large classes, calling them The four Principles of Scientific Management, all of which, he says, are necessary to secure its object, which is the change magnitude output per unit of wo rld effort. The first of these four great duties (as he also names them), which are undertaken by the management, is to deliberately make in all the rule of thumb knowledge, which is possessed, by all the twenty different kinds of tradesmen who are at work in the establishment. Knowledge, which has never been recorded, is in the heads, hands and bodies, in the knack, skill and dexterity, which these men possess. The second of the new duties assumed by the management is the scientific selection and then the progressive development of the workmen. The workmen are study it may seem preposterous, but they are studied just as machines have been studied. The third indebtedness is to bring the scientifically selected workmen and the science unneurotic. They moldiness be brought together they result not come together without it. I do not wish for an instant to have any one think I have a poor opinion of a artificer far from it. I merely state a fact when I say that you may put your scie ntific methods before a workman all you are a mind to, and nine times out of ten he go away do the same old way when I say, make the workman do his work in accordance with the faithfulnesss of science I do not say make in an arbitrary consciousness I want to qualify the word make, it has rather a hard sound. Some one must inspire the man to make the change. The fourth principle is a deliberate division of the work, which was formerly through by the workman into twain sections, one of which is handed over to the management. An immense mass of new duties is thrown and twisted on the management, which formerly belonged to the workmen requiring cooperation between the management and the workmen, which accounts more than anything else for the fact that there has never been a strike under scientific management. In one of our machine shops, for instance, where we do miscellaneous work there will be at least one man on the management side for every threesome workmen.(2)Each one of t hese scientific propositions is perfectly familiar to the workman in spite of the rather naive assurance of the capability engineers that they are new. He has known them in slightly different guise for a century past. The new thing is the proposition to develop what has been in the past the tricks of the trade into a principle of production. Scientific management logically follows and accomplishs the factory process. The first and fourth of Mr. Taylors great duties or principles is to deliberately aggregate in all the rule of thumb knowledge of all workmen, and transfer this knowledge to the management. That is exactly what machinery did and is still doing to craft workers. It usurped the knowledge of the worker and transferred that knowledge to the management. The great discovery of scientific management is that machinery is not take up completely, or as completely as it should, a workmans trade knowledge.Mr. Taylor says This knowledge is the greatest asset that a workman posse sses. It is his capital.(3) The task, which efficiency engineers have set, themselves is to gather up the last vestiges of capital possessed by the workingman, and place it for safe keeping and efficiency under The Management. There is an impression that all efficiency methods originate in the brains of efficiency engineers, or with the management. Mr. Taylor is not alone in assuring us that the methods are discovered in the heads and in the hands of the workers, that they are the result of the workers experience in very great degree.A producer as an illustration told the following storyA shoe manufacturer told one girl that he wanted to see how much she could do. She said healthful, there is a certain kind of a filler that I used in another factory. If you will use that kind of filler I can do my work so much more quickly. Another thing, the paper you are using on that tip is too coarse. If you will use a finer paper I wont have to use so much filler. The story concluded So that girl and this manufacturer worked out a condition that made it easier for her to perform more work.(4)Scientific management is a good scavenger. It is out for every scrap of trade knowledge. Following the machine, it proposes to clean up the last vestige of craftsmanship and to put the clean-cut touches to modern industry. There are to be no chance bits of capital lying around relieve in the hands of this man and that when the efficiency engineers have finished their job.The second and third of the Four Principles set up how this is done. Mr. Taylor says The workmen are studied just as machines have been studied. And, finally, it is necessary to bring the scientifically selected workman and the science together by inspiring the workman. The workman is to be scientifically selected by a teacher or else of by a foreman he is to be studied by this teacher, as well as taught, and the unit of human effort is to be squeezed out of him by observing the law of rest and fatigue. He is to be inspired by the same old bonus of the same old task system in which he has served his time. But the bonus or rate, according to efficiency engineers, is never to be cut, as employers who speeded up their workers have cut it in the past. If the old-time employer ever made so gentlemanly a promise regarding the continuous liquidatement of a bonus, he knew he could not keep it. He knew that rase out of the goodness of his heart he could not indefinitely continue a bonus or a rate, which his competitors did not pay.But apparently scientific management trains of industry certain ethical standards. Mr. Taylor says that scientific management involves a complete revolution, both on the part of the management and of the men a complete change in the mental attitude on both sides. Labour would agree with Mr. Taylor, and add that it would require as well a mental revolution in Wall Street. Apparently this is what the New Capitalism, of which scientific management is a part, does require.N ew Capitalism proposes to disregard the law of wages, and to substitute a beneficent law, which pays better wages, also better profits. But the results have not as yet justified the workers in surrendering their own agencies for self-protection. As yet labour is unconscious of any sloughing off in hardships under the law of supply and demand. It is not conscious that the introduction of methods, which have, for their object the increased output of human effort has had any appreciable connection with wages or wage order.Union men cite numberless cases where efficiency methods have been introduced, like the task and bonus systems, the stop watch, the observation of the laws of rest and fatigue, and yet wage rates were not increased, but were, in the course of time, reduced. The efficiency engineer answers Ah, then that is not scientific management But he will state in conventions to other efficiency engineers that he has great pain in getting the management to carry out the end of t heir program, which will insure the worker, the receipt of his bonus. An efficiency promoter observed on one of these occasions I have had so many garner from people who look on scientific management as a new instrument by which they could squeeze a little more out of the workman and give him no return. I do not want to have anything to do with them. We must share what we get.(5)Organized labour appreciates the wish, but recognizes the bar for an efficiency engineer to be an engineer and a financier in action at one and the same time. It is not the efficiency engineer who can fulfil his own promise. He must leave it to the capitalists to share what they get of the new capital which the engineer has collected out of the hands or brains of the workers. In scientifically managed plants there is no change whatever in the status of capital and labour, except the panoptic enslavement of the latter. Efficiency engineers might successfully promote scientific management by advertising thei r rely that the management will share what it gets if the factory system had been a less efficient teacher. But the factory system has taught the workers by a series of object lessons. Labour unions represent those workers who have learned that they must rely on schemes for relief, which they themselves initiate, or control. The rest and fatigue schemes of scientific management are especially praiseworthy of suspicion. These schemes propose to finish the job of reducing the labour to a machine attachment, to rob him of what little initiatory may be left him in a certain freedom of motion. Mr. Taylor defines his idea of initiative. He says The manufacturer who has any intelligence must realize that his first duty should be to obtain the initiative of all these tradesmen who are working under him to obtain their hard work, their good will, their ingenuity, their determination to treat the employers business as if it were their own.And in this connection I wish to strain the meaning of the word initiative to indicate all of these good qualities.(6) All propositions to increase wealth make an appeal to imagination. No one, certainly not organized labour, doubts the ability of American capitalists to discover new schemes neither for increasing the output, nor of the American workman to produce it. It has been describe that the labour cost of production in England, with its lower wage rates, is higher than the cost in America, because the American workmen, through the pressure of management, yield an amount per worker unknown to English labour. Scientific management proposes to increase this yield by some(prenominal) hundred percent.Workers looking back a generation or two may admit that with the introduction of machine processes they have here and there reaped a harvest of several cotton shirts instead of one woollen, a standing lamp instead of the ancestral candlestick, and, as clear gain, a Victor talking machine. But no one is ever jubilant over luxuries, wh ich they have bought with their lives. It is organized labour alone that remembers the ghastly price paid for increased consumption the generations of men, women, and children who have been maimed and polish off in the process. Greed and desire, not the well being of labour, are still the motive forces back of increased wealth production. If we are about to enter upon an era of a New Capitalism which recognizes that it will pay to increase the number of cotton shirts without exacting so heavy a toll as has been exacted in the past, organized labour still demands that it shall determine, or have a voice in determining, what that toll shall be and what shall be the reward.Scientific management, the promoters say, recognizes no difference in determining standards of efficiency between management, capital goods and labour. Well and good labour does.Organized labours observations of a worker do not end with the days work. They pull up over the wear and tear of a lifetime. They take into consideration a workers ability to react after(prenominal) work, mentally as well as physically. They take into consideration the workers ability to realize his maximum in his non-labouring hours. Today Riordan Publishing employs over 4,000 people worldwide with offices in New York, London, Seattle, Rome, and has o ver 15,000 authors and artist. Each location within Riordan Publishing has created individual processes for author/editor collaboration. Riordan Publishing has been searching for an Enterprise solution to unify their international locations and Authors that are spread around the globe. sharing data between author/office and office/office has been a redundant and convoluted process. Riordan Publishing is now exploring their options for unifying and synchronizing all their offices. This transition will introduce global employees to a unexpended fast secure and modern platform. The new enterprise system that Riordan decided to implement is cloud computing.Cloud ComputingEgnyte is Riordan Publishings answer for a cloud computing solution. Egnyte is proven cloud remembering platform. Egnyte just won Europes Best Data Center Storage Solution award at The viith Annual Cloud World forum in London. Egnyte offers enterprise solutions which includes a scalable, shoot sharing infrastructur e with a complete modify administration, auditing, and storage integrations for use of unlimited employees. These features are what persuaded Riordan to select Egnyte as their cloud computing source.Business RequirementsRiordan Publishings business requirements are simple global access, reliability, speed, minimizes redundant costs by combining its software andhardware infrastructure, security, an ease of collaboration solution, and affordability. Having servers in four different countries has been costly to monitor and maintain. By virtualizing the servers on the Cloud platform, it eliminates the need for four different server locations, the electric bill and internet bills associated with running them and also the IT staff that maintains them. The shift from the four servers into the Cloud buns pen Riordan an immense amount of capital and enable stocks to be used in other ways such as corporate expansion. Riordans IT team has been growing nearly as fast as their list of new writers trying to keep up with the demands of supporting its legacy software and dated servers. Riordan needs a solution that will upgrade its ancient system a capacious with cutting its cost in its infrastructure management, and a way to unite all their servers into one centralized setting that everyone can advantageously access, the solution being the Cloud. The Cloud computing solution will provide a reliable, fast, and an effective method for Riordans editors, writers, marketing, financial teams to collaborate enabling them to upload, access trade union movements from the office, or the comfort of a writers home. Riordan is in need of a system that helps with editorial workflow, a way to unite their writers with their editors, and management for a collective collaboration resolution so goals and deadlines are easily met. There is also a need for an ease of access d holdload for outside vendors such as a printing house or e-book company like Amazon Kindle.InformationRiordan Publishing handles various amounts of information daily. Due to the spirit of Riordans work as a publisher, it is very important that information is protected. The type of information on the cloud would consist of original literature, photos, research, and products scheduled to be released. Security is of an utmost importance because of the inherent threat of plagiarism, intellectual, and cre ative theft. Since the company has 4,000 employees and over 15,000 contracted authors and artist, the cloud would have to be very decently to sports get hold ofing the demands of the employees. The employees of Riordan use the Office Suite, Microsoft Outlook, and a plethora of other originative software industrys. Each international office and individualauthor and artist can use a different type of mobile mould including, Blackberry, iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone. The new system would have to take all the employees needs, and incorporate that into the custom create cloud operating system. The cloud would eventually have all employees emails, conversations, files, pictures, and documents. The information most definitely would be safeguarded from vulnerabilities, threats, and risks from cyber-crimes.Security and respectable ConcernsOne of the main concerns a company has is the security which can involve ethical issues. Riordan Publishing had a couple concerns regarding the s afe keeping of their data in the cloud. Some of the concerns were If employees are allowed to use cellular phones for business use, then how will the company know when employees are abusing company time for personal use? What happens if data is hacked, and client information is stolen and sold? Is the company held accountable when laws are broken by employees? Riordan Publishing come with decided to take steps that would educate all employees of the laws, and the consequences of breaking them. The company will be implementing requisite meetings to keep employees informed of cyber-crimes, rules of the use of business smart phones, appropriate use of persona time at work, and ways to improve employees work habits. Riordans main focus is data security which needs to meet industry standards that consist of keeping the system up to date and monitored.Once implemented, Riordan will benefit from the cloud system enabling employees to connect to the corporate network over VPN for a seamles s experience anywhere. The contributions to the company are vast, but the main appeal is that employees can access a network that is custom shipshape to them from any online connection. Riordan also would not have to pay for hefty data center bills, expensive servers, a tech team to maintain equipment, and power bills.Conversion ProcessRiordan Publishing confederacy decided that the best course of action regarding issues with their previous system was to convert to Cloud Computing. In order for Riordan Publishing to merge their international offices andindividual contracted authors into one centralized data system, a Cloud Storage and way System will be implemented. Egnyte will standardize procedures for sharing, collaboration, storing, and accessing a centralized network. This will make it feasible for Riordans entire pool of employees to follow the same processes, continue procedures of working with authors to publish new books, and produce publications in a more streamline t imeline.Cloud computing allows Riordan Publishing to achieve one of their goals of going green. Riordan employees, contracted authors, and artists also do not have to worry about the costs, hassles of mailing manuscripts, or brand through emails to find work they are using for collaboration with one another. Egnytes easily accessed cloud storage allows all users to organize, view, and update data simultaneously.Proposed Process ChangesNew and existing contracted authors and artists will be given access to Riordans Egnyte account. The diagram below shows how simple, and streamline the new process will be. diagram 1.1All of Riordans International offices, contracted Authors, and Artists can now access the same centralized data network to create, collaborate, and distribute new books using Egnytes cloud storage. (Egnyte.com, 2014)Cloud TechnologyCloud technology uses a method called, offloading. Cloud technology manages the majority of programs processing. This means that most processing can be done on the cloud as opposed to the actual mobile devices, increasing boilers suit efficiency. Being able to access the cloud from a laptop or smartphone provides great flexi bility. Employees are to tour while working, or work from a remote location. The mobility also has negative implications mainly being security and privacy. Users depend on the IT management for security and privacy settings because the data is stored and managed on the cloud.A bug or security loophole exploited may result in a breach of privacy. There is truly no way to know how a cloud vendor safeguards data. Potential vulnerabilities could, for instance, grant a group access to passwords, or other private information used in Riordans Publishing Company. Cloud computing also brings up the question of reliability. Riordan has to understand that from a technical standpoint it would not be affirmable to provide users with the cloud in a place with no internet connectivity such as a park, a basement, a tunnel, and a subway.Even with the limitations the cloud can be quite useful and powerful if employees are properly trained to adhere to strict computer and network policies that disco urage them from leaving their devices unmonitored. The benefits of cloud computing far outweigh the negative aspects like giving a company the ability to start up a network with low overhead costs, and little setup time. The maintenance aspect of owning your own servers, and having to up keep up and administer them is also new the third party cloud companys responsibility. This would give Riordans employees more time to work on their tasks at hand rather than fiddle with a network. The mobile platform has many obstacles to overcome, but once a user does feign a reliable internet connection the user will see the benefits of not having to be restrict to their office. Together the cloud and mobile devices will provide flexibility and mobility that will push Riordan into a productive and successful future. The diagram below represents how Riordan Publishings information will process through the cloud.Diagram Riordans information system flowing through the cloud.Business RequirementsRi ordan has had problems in the past with authors and editors not making deadlines because of the way they shared information in the past. Mailing hard copies of manuscripts, getting lost in the mail, misplaced, or shipped to the wrong Riordan office. Those manuscripts that were sent in digitally were not being saved to a network require where others could access them. Instead, they were stored locally to specific machines where they could be lost due to computer failure, someone leaving the company, or someone due to calling in sick. This meant no one else could access the information which meant deadlines were not met. Riordan was losing capital hand over fist because they were doing extra unnecessary double work. Authors, artists, and editors could not collaborate in a timely manner because of the slow sharing process. This is what initiated the conversion.Riordans ultimate demand for cloud technology comes from needing a Global unified network experience for all persons associat ed with Riordan regardless of their physical locations in the world. Cloud Computing enables Riordan to globalize the workforce at a lower cost. This allows the user access to the cloud as long as they have an internet connection. The reduction in spending on technology infrastructure makes for minimum up front spending, and the cloud can be scaled to pay as you go while services can be implemented based on Riordans demands. The overall savings Riordan will have over a course of several years can be used to fund new operations, expand the organization, hire new employees, give bonuses, and upgrade personal desktop computers and laptops. The impact will be more purchasing power and more capital. The cloud computing infrastructure gives more immunity to Riordan. This allows them to work without diving into heavy software, licensing fees, or spending big money on hardware. Additionally, the direction no matter if it is the OS, email client, or software can all be customized. It would not be a problem for the organization to just suddenly change their mind about their cloud. What Riordan really gets out of this business venture is the two most valuable things in the business world time and money. The cloud makes the acquisition of these two valuable elements to be made fairly quickly.Riordan will profit from Cloud Computing because they are willing to take the necessary steps to evolve with the chances of technology. Egnyte is going to integrate all the aspects of Riordan Publishing Company into one location making it easy for all employees, authors, editors, and artists to collaborate with one another in a single place the cloud. Acquiring and Maintaining EgnyteRiordan determined changes were need to improve performance, communication, and time management throughout all locations of the company. This was decided after making a business process management plan. Riordan researched the benefits and risks of converting to cloud computing. After determine cloud com puting would enable the company to improve communication, data storage, and enhanced project management Riordan needed to decide on the best way to convert to the new system. Riordan chose to use the direct cutover conversion process.Riordan ceremonious a project management strategy that helped the company better understand their budgets, time constraints, tools, skills, and techniques this gave the company perceptiveness on how to improve these theaters with Egnytes Cloud Computing application. Next, Riordan began training employees on this new system show the employees the different enhancements that Egnyte offered, and ways to deal with issues that may arise from the conversion. Riordan also purported an IT strategy to ensure that all areas of the company understood the companys end goal. The one risk in cloud computing that Riordan needed to address was securing their data. They adapted a Third Party Key prudence System to hand over an added step in securing their data. The key management system that Riordan decided to choose was Vormetric Data Security. Riordan believes that when all areas of the company work closely with the IT division, then the company will run expeditiously. This will allow employees to focus on other areas in the company that require employees attention.Strategic RoleCloud Computing will innovate and produce business growth for Riordan Publishing Company. This will be a hybrid cloud that contains software-as-a-service allowing Riordan to efficiently communicate, sharedata, and reduce costs. Once the system is in place, the employees are trained, and all departments are fine tuned to the needed adjustments regarding the cloud allowing the company to focus on the accelerating projects, collaborating with colleagues, strengthening relationships with distributors, and most importantly discovering new talent. One area that is overlooked because of time restrictions is unknown writers that submit unrequested manuscripts that are placed in a quite a little called slush pile. The benefits of Engytes Cloud service include the ability to access new technology, faster application development, available expertise in special skills, faster responses to business demands, and flexibility in IT peaks and valleys. Employees, authors, aspiring writers, editors, and artists can easily communicate with video conferences while viewing information about an active project no matter the office location. (Andriole, S.J., 2012)This conversion will essentially allow for cost reduction that could be used to scout for new clients which opens up more doors of opportunities with the cloud through chat groups and communities, implement new design tools, improve promoting tactics, update to the newest material for the production of the books, and implementing the policy of bringing your own device to work. This policy is thinkable because employees and all other persons involved in the company can connect through devices such as smart ph ones, laptops, thin clients, and tablets. This can reduce the cost of purchasing devices for the company, and allows the company the ability to give incentives for participation.ReferencesAndriole, S. (2012).
